What is Adjunctive Therapy?
Adjunctive therapy means taking 2 or more medications to help control seizures. If you are currently taking a medication to control your epilepsy, but are still having seizures, you are not alone. In fact, up to 40% of people taking 1 medicine for epilepsy continue to have seizures, according to the Epilepsy Foundation. Even people who are taking 2 or more medications may continue to have seizures.
This can be a very frustrating experience. But don’t give up on finding a treatment that works for you, because there may be other medications that could help control your seizures. In many cases, these other medications are adjunctive, or add-on, therapies. An adjunctive therapy is a medication that you take in addition to your current medication.
Remember that 1 medication is not enough for many people. If your seizures are not controlled with 1 medication, talk to your doctor.
